FATHER ANTHONY BRUNO SPEAKS TO QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL ITALIAN SOCIETY

Hamden—Father Anthony Bruno spoke to a group of law students, faculty and CIABA members about his experiences as the Director of Religious Education for the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections.  He coordinates prison ministry programs not only for Catholics, but also for persons of the Jewish faith, Muslims, and other Christian religions. Fr. Bruno provided an overview of the prison system, the size of the population, the costs to maintain it, and the importance to many of the inmates of an organized opportunity to worship.  Fr. Bruno commented that lawyers and law students

spend a lot of time learning about criminal law from the perspective of prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys, but very rarely do they ever learn about what occurs behind the prison walls.  He shared some of his experiences during the time that he worked in the prison ministry, and brought with him some “shanks”, sharp weapons confiscated from inmates

that are crafted from everyday items such as pens, toothbrushes or pieces of metal.

Fr. Bruno was ordained as a priest over thirty years ago, and has served parishes all over the State of Connecticut, including Mt. Carmel in Waterbury, New Haven and Enfield as well as in Maryland, where he received his training.

This event was sponsored in conjunction with the Italian Law Society at Quinnipiac University School of Law, and the CIABA would like to extend a special thank you to its President Christina Smith, for all her assistance with this event.
